The market underneath all of this is healthy. At Google I/O 2026, Google announced that Android UI development is now Compose First, moving the older View components into maintenance mode. Views won’t be deprecated or removed, and they’ll still get critical bug fixes, but every new API, tool, and piece of documentation goes to Compose from here. If you’re starting Android today, learn Compose. Don’t burn a weekend on XML layouts.

Android developer skills include Kotlin coroutines and Flow, the Jetpack libraries (ViewModel, Room, Navigation, WorkManager), dependency injection with Hilt, and a working understanding of the activity lifecycle. You’ll also spend real time on fragmentation. Different OS versions, screen densities, and manufacturer quirks make testing across the device spread a genuine part of the job in a way it just isn’t on iOS.

Hiring is broad: big tech, telecom, automotive, logistics, retail, gaming, and any company with a large international user base. Android holds roughly 68 percent of global mobile market share, so companies building for worldwide audiences frequently staff Android first, or at least equally.

Career paths mirror iOS: senior, lead, architect, or a jump into platform infrastructure. Android developer jobs at the senior level pay well, and the Compose migration has created a real premium for engineers who can move legacy codebases forward without breaking them.

Cross-Platform Developer Career

A cross platform app developer writes one codebase and ships it to both iOS and Android. The pitch writes itself: one team, one repository, roughly half the work.

Three frameworks dominate. React Native uses JavaScript or TypeScript and is backed by Meta. Flutter uses Dart and comes from Google. Kotlin Multiplatform has matured quickly, and JetBrains brought Compose Multiplatform for iOS to stable in 2025, so teams can now share both business logic and UI across platforms in Kotlin. Compose Multiplatform is currently stable for Android, iOS, and desktop, with web support still in beta.

The skills stack differently here. React Native developers need strong JavaScript or TypeScript plus React fundamentals. Flutter developers need Dart and comfort with widget composition. Everyone on this path needs at least some native knowledge, because sooner or later you’ll write a platform channel, or debug a Gradle error, or untangle a signing failure in Xcode. That’s the part the tutorials skip.

The advantages are real: faster delivery, shared code, one product team instead of two, and much easier feature parity. The limitations are equally real. Heavy graphics, tight hardware integration, and brand-new OS features tend to land better natively. When Apple ships a new API at WWDC, native developers get it that week. Cross-platform teams wait for the bridge.

Whatever platform you choose, a shared set of mobile app developer skills carries across all three.

Programming fundamentals. Data structures, algorithms, and clean architecture patterns like MVVM. Interviews still test this, and they will keep testing it.

Mobile UI/UX. Not visual design exactly, but the ability to build interfaces that respect platform conventions. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines and Material Design aren’t optional reading.

APIs and backend integration. REST and GraphQL, authentication flows, token refresh, offline handling, and retry logic. Most mobile bugs live at this boundary.

Databases. Local persistence with Room, Core Data, SwiftData, SQLite, or Realm, plus a real caching strategy.

Git and version control. Branching strategy, code review, and merge conflict resolution in a codebase several people touch daily.

Testing and debugging. Unit tests, UI tests, and comfort with profilers and crash reporting tools like Crashlytics or Sentry.

Performance optimization. App launch time, frame rate, memory footprint, and battery drain. Users abandon slow apps and then write one-star reviews about it.

Cross-platform pay typically lands slightly lower on average. ZipRecruiter puts React Native developers around $129,348 and Flutter developers around $98,514, while Glassdoor lists React Native at about $114,418. Some of that gap is real. Some of it reflects a larger share of contract, agency, and junior roles in the sample.

What actually moves your number: years of shipped experience, location or remote pay band, industry (fintech and health tech pay more than agencies), company size, and whether you can own a release end to end instead of just building screens. Specialization helps too. Someone who can run a Compose migration, or handle mobile security and compliance work, prices very differently than a generalist.

iOS, Android, or Cross-Platform: Which Career Should You Choose?

Choose iOS if you like Apple’s ecosystem, prefer working inside a tight and well-documented set of constraints, and want to build for a user base that spends more per head. iOS holds about 61 percent of US mobile market share, so if your target employers are American consumer or finance brands, this is the safer bet.

Choose Android if you want breadth. More devices, more form factors, more of the world. Kotlin is a pleasure to write and transfers reasonably well to backend work. If you want to build for global markets or work in automotive, embedded, or wearables, Android opens more doors.

Choose cross-platform if you like shipping fast, enjoy JavaScript or Dart, and want to be immediately useful to startups and small product teams. It’s also the most efficient path if you’re already a web developer, because React Native reuses most of what you already know.

Your existing background should carry serious weight here. Web developer with React experience? React Native is a short hop. Java or backend background? Kotlin and Android will feel familiar fast. Coming in fresh with no strong preference and a US job market focus? iOS or Android native both hold up better long term than starting cross-platform first.

Career Path for Mobile App Developers

The ladder looks roughly the same across all three specializations.

Junior Mobile Developer. Zero to two years. You build screens, fix bugs, and learn the codebase. Your code gets reviewed heavily, and that’s the point.

Mobile Developer. Two to four years. You own features end to end, write your own tests, and handle releases without supervision.

Senior Mobile Developer. Four to eight years. You make architecture decisions, mentor juniors, and get pulled into the gnarly performance and crash investigations nobody else wants.

Lead Mobile Developer. You own the technical direction of an app or a squad, set code review standards, and work directly with product.

Mobile has lifecycles, offline states, permission prompts, memory limits, and a release process where you can’t just push a hotfix on a Friday afternoon.

Going native to cross-platform is usually easy, because you already understand what the abstraction is hiding. Going the other way takes longer. You’ll be filling in the fundamentals the framework was quietly covering for you.
