Types of Jobs Most Likely to Qualify for an H-1B Visa

The H-1B visa is a type of non-immigrant visa that allows employers in the United States to employ qualified foreign employees on a temporary basis for “specialty occupations”. To be eligible for an H-1B visa, you must satisfy certain key requirements (such as your educational background and the type of job you’re applying for).

IT-related jobs typically account for a significant amount of H-1B visa applications each year. 66.6% of all H-1B visa job approvals were for IT-centric job roles. However, not all technical jobs are considered specialty occupations.

In this article, we will explore what types of jobs are considered ‘speciality occupations’, the basic criteria to apply for an H-1B visa, the types of jobs and titles that are most likely to qualify for an H-1B visa and much more.

The H-1B Visa’s Basic Requirements

The H-1B visa is a specific type of visa for ‘specialty occupation’ employees that have received an employment offer in the United States. However, not all technical or complex roles are included in the ‘specialty occupation, category.

The job being offered must require a specific set of specialized skills and an educational background of a bachelor’s degree or more in the specific field in question. The job responsibilities and duties must also be complex enough to require a bachelor’s degree. For example, an applicant applying for a computer science role in the United States must have a bachelor’s degree in computer science to be eligible for an H-1B visa.

The employer is responsible for filing the H-1B petition and demonstrating that the position satisfies the above-mentioned criteria. This typically involves providing comprehensive explanations about the position’s duties, educational requirements, and the prospective employee’s educational qualifications. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will then evaluate this information to determine if the job qualifies for an H-1B visa or not.

Examples of Jobs That Have Been Approved for H-1B Visas

1. Software Developer

The primary responsibilities of a software developer include building, designing and continuously testing software applications. This may involve front-end development (user-centric elements), back-end development (designing business and server-side logic) or both (full-stack development).

The chances of receiving an H-1B visa for this role are extremely high. Software developers are now in more demand than ever before, especially applicants with expertise in emerging tech and tools like AI, machine learning and cloud solutions.

To increase your chances of receiving an H-1B visa as a software developer, ensure that you are proficient in popular programming languages like Java and Python, software development methodologies like Agile and Scrum and version control systems like Git.

    2. Systems Engineer

The key responsibilities of systems engineers are building, implementing, and maintaining several types of computer systems. This may include integrating hardware and software, network administration and optimizing system performance.

The chances of receiving an H-1B visa as a systems engineer are also high. There is a growing demand for skilled systems engineers to manage complex IT infrastructure across different industries and organizations.

Key skills for a systems engineer include knowledge of diverse operating systems like Windows and Linux, awareness of different networking protocols and an understanding of system administration tools.

      3. Mobile Application Developer

The role of a mobile application developer includes creating, developing, testing, and deploying applications for mobile devices like iOS and Android. This usually requires a comprehensive understanding of platform-specific development tools and user experience tools.

The chances of obtaining an H-1B visa for mobile application development roles is extremely high. The constantly evolving and growing mobile application industry has created a large demand for skilled developers that are proficient in platform-specific development languages like Swift, Kotlin and Java, mobile application development frameworks and UI/UX best practices.

        4. Software Architect

The role of a software architect typically involves designing the architecture of organizational software systems. This includes system components, data models and interfaces. Software architects are usually responsible for leading development teams and higher-level technical decision making that can impact organizations as a whole.

While there are fewer software architect positions available compared to development roles, the demand for skilled architects is strong. Key skills required for this position include a detailed understanding of software design patterns, enterprise architecture frameworks and executive decision-making capabilities.

Matching Your Background to H-1B Job Types

Are you exploring visa job postings and wondering how you can match your current background to the several types of H-1B sponsorship jobs?

Make sure that you carefully examine the job description and requirements to verify that a bachelor’s degree is required and that you have a relevant degree related to the field. While the roles mentioned above are a great starting point, it does not include every job position or title that qualifies for H-1B visa jobs.
