Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to define API requirements, standards, and integrations.
• Implement robust API security measures (OAuth, JWT, rate limiting, IP filtering, etc.).
• Monitor and optimize API performance using Kong’s tools and third-party observability platforms.
• Develop and maintain custom Kong plugins in Lua to extend gateway functionality.
• Implement logging, monitoring, and tracing solutions using OTEL, Jaeger, Datadog, and Splunk.
• Create efficient, reusable, and well-documented Lua scripts for extending Kong’s core features.
• Provide technical documentation, knowledge sharing, and training on API management best practices.
• Manage API lifecycle, including versioning, documentation, and policy enforcement.
• Administer and support cloud-based infrastructure (AWS, Azure) and API Gateway services.
• Work collaboratively within Agile teams and interact effectively with stakeholders across the organization.

Required Skills

• 5–8 years of experience in API management tools with deep expertise in Kong API Gateway.
• Proven ability to implement, configure, and optimize Kong for performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Redis, and AWS infrastructure components relevant to Kong.
• Ability to build secure and scalable Kubernetes-based infrastructure, including patching and maintaining Kong clusters.
• Experience with observability tools, particularly:
  • OpenTelemetry (OTEL) framework
  • Datadog for metrics
  • Splunk for logs
• LUA scripting experience, including development of custom Kong plugins.
• Experience in APIM platform migrations (e.g., transitioning from one APIM solution to Kong).
• Familiarity with working in a SaaS environment, supporting API adoption and onboarding for internal application teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Kong certification or relevant API management certifications.
• Experience with Apigee Edge
• Hands-on experience with proxy migration from Apigee Edge to Kong.
